The Friends of Scarborough Library are completely volunteer run. Who's in charge, organizing all the fabulous book drives and events? The board! 

If you love the library and are looking for an active volunteer gig, consider joining the board. 

Note: We are not the Board of Trustees that governs the library. We are a separate non-profit organization. But we do collaborate with them and sit on their Community Relations Development Committee. 

What is required to join the Friends board? 

Love of the library--we welcome anyone who wants to work with us! Our bylaws limit us to 10 board members.

What the Friends board does:

  • Organize and run the annual book sale, plus the donation drives that fill the shed
  • Participate in events where we would be a fitting (and fun!) presence, in collaboration with library staff
  • Recruit lecturers for the Emerson Lecture Series
  • Meet regularly to discuss our business--budget, event planning, library needs, etc. See below for meeting cadence.
  • Keep in close contact with library leadership 
  • Write the library a nice juicy check for summer reading, the annual gift, and other programming

Time commitment:

  • We meet the second Thursday of the month from 5:30 - 7pm at the library (Zoom available). We skip 2-4 months per year, totaling about 8-10 meetings per year. We always take July and December off, and skip a month now and then in slower seasons, like March and November.
  • We hold monthly donation drives in the warm months, but we only need 2 people at each one, so we take turns so no one is doing everything.
  • We occasionally get together to sort the books in the shed into genres, as needed.
  • Attend Emerson Lectures and other Friends-sponsored events.
  • The book sale is a long weekend with a lot of work, but we take it in shifts.
